Moving is a great time to purge old things and start fresh in a new space. People often toss their unworn clothes, outdated electronics, and unnecessary knick knacks ahead of a move. Unfortunately, people often toss non-perishable food as well. Although it makes sense that people want to begin life in their new home with a clean pantry, lots of food ends up going to waste that could feed those in need.
That’s where Move For Hunger steps in. Move For Hunger is an organization that gives people the chance to donate their unwanted food. Simply set aside non-perishable food items during your move, and Move For Hunger packs it up and delivers it to a local food pantry.
Little Guys Movers Wilmington has been joining forces with Move For Hunger since 2017. The Little Guys collect food at any home that they can, and every few months they donate all that’s been collected. Little Guys Movers is thrilled to announce that over 400 lbs of food was donated in the last quarter of 2019, in partnership with the Redpoint Apartments and Playa Bowls Restaurant.
“It feels good to be able to do our job and give back to the community at the same time,” says Branch Manager Andrew Harmon. “There are over 500,000 children in North Carolina that are food insecure. We try and do our part and collect as much as we can, and we look forward to many more years and many more pounds of food donated.”
If you’d like to donate to Move For Hunger, you can donate items during your move or bring your donation to any local Little Guys Movers office (whether you’re moving or not!). Non-perishable food items that are needed include pasta sauce, baby food and formula, dry beans, flour, cereal, oatmeal, juice, rice, peanut butter, jelly, crackers, cookies, and canned items including vegetables, fruits, stews, soups, beans, tuna, and meat.
