Furnishing Your New Space According to Feng Shui

Moving into a new home is the perfect time to ensure your space flows well and feels harmonious. Feng shui, the ancient Chinese practice of arranging objects to create balance, is a great place to start. Here are some feng shui tips for beginners.

Incorporate the Five Elements

Before you can start moving things around, you need to understand the basics of feng shui. Feng Shui is based on five elements — earth, fire, water, wood, and metal. Each of these elements represents different types of energy, and you want to incorporate items made of these elements in your home to bring these energies into your space. For example, wood promotes growth, while metal fosters clarity and precision. Water features, like fountains, encourage reflection, while fire elements, such as candles, can ignite creativity. Adding a little of each element is key to practicing feng shui.

Have a Clean Entryway

In feng shui, the entryway is known as the “mouth of chi,” or the place where energy enters your home. Keep this area clear, clean, and inviting to attract good fortune. Place a welcoming mat, ensure the area is well-lit, and avoid clutter around the front door.

Create Flow with Furniture

When arranging furniture, consider the flow of movement and energy. In feng shui, it’s important to allow chi to move freely through your space. Avoid blocking pathways with bulky furniture and create open, circular arrangements to invite positive energy. Always place seating in a way that encourages conversation and connection, and make sure everything is well-lit and balanced, with a mix of soft and natural lighting.

Utilize the Commanding Position

Beds, desks, and stoves should always be in the commanding position. In the commanding position, you can see the door to the room while utilizing the object (aka while lying in bed, sitting at your desk, or cooking at your stove). Ideally, these pieces sit diagonally to the door, not directly in line with it. Using the commanding position provides a sense of security and control, making you feel more at ease.
